Exhibition Histories Talks: APTART 1982–84 – video online
Nikita Alekseev and Vadim Zakharov were joined by Margarita Tupitsyn to discuss the APTART ‘anti-shows’, that took place in Moscow between 1982 and 1984.
On Saturday 23 September artists Nikita Alekseev and Vadim Zakharov were joined by scholar, curator and critic Margarita Tupitsyn for the fourteenth in our series of talks analysing and contextualising exhibitions through the personal accounts of the organisers responsible for them.
For this event, coinciding with the latest book in the Exhibition Histories series, Alekseev, Zakharov and Tupitsyn discussed the APTART ‘anti-shows’ that took place in Moscow from 1982–84. These covert and anarchic actions, which soon came into conflict with the Soviet authorities, represent a collective attempt to rethink the politics of exhibition-making and the practice of making public in the absence of a public sphere.
This event is a collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery, London. It is part of the Exhibition Histories research and publication project, developed by Afterall and published in association with the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.
