Mark Lewis in conversation with Laura Mulvey
Join us on Monday 12 May 2014 for a lecture to celebrate Mark Lewis’s professorship at Central Saint Martins, London.
Mark Lewis’s film and digital moving image works are often depictions of everyday life that make subtle, perhaps accidental, reference to the wider tradition of photography and painting. Recent films like Man (2012), Smoker at Spitalfields (2012) and City Road 24 March (2012) make direct reference to the pictorial exploration of the everyday through the use of cinematographic techniques. In his film Black Mirror at the National Gallery (2011) the interaction among the museum space, the mirror and the cinematic camera becomes a collaborative exercise for observation and composition making. He is also co-director and co-founder of Afterall.
Mark Lewis will present Invention, his ongoing film project that imagines a contemporary city with no cinema or moving image devices. Invention proposes that the emerging modern city of the nineteenth century is itself the original cinema with its intense concentration of moving bodies, shadows and reflections. The project spans upcoming exhibitions this autumn at the São Paulo Biennial and the Louvre, Paris.
The presentation will be followed by a conversation between Mark Lewis and Laura Mulvey.
